'The Radetzky March is one of the most readable, poignant and superb novels in twentieth century German; it stands with the best of Thomas Mann, Alfred Doblin and Robert Musil' Harold Bloom
The Radetzky March charts the history of the Trotta family through three generations from 1859 to 1916. The decadence and impending collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire are described in beautifully crafted and vivid language. Through the Battle of Solferino to the entombment of the last Hapsburg emperor, Roth's intelligent compassion illuminates the crumbling of an empire.
About the Author:
Joseph Roth (1894-1939) was the great elegist of the cosmopolitan, tolerant and doomed Central European culture that flourished in the dying days of the Austrian Empire. He wrote thirteen novels, including The Radetzky March and The String of Pearls.
Reviews:
'Nothing else I've read in the past months (or years!) quite compares with Joseph Roth's masterpiece...once discovered lodges in one's mind and emotions and never goes away again' - (Simon Schama, The Guardian)
